
A Risk Assessment Is Only Valuable If Its Quality Is Right
Nearly every industrial installation has one or more risk assessments. However, the mere existence of a document says very little about the quality of the assessment itself.
The true value of a risk assessment is determined by the quality of its assumptions, the depth of the technical evaluation, and the competence of the specialists who perform it.
This is precisely where significant developments have taken place in recent years. The latest developments within the IEC 60079 series, EN ISO 80079-36/-37, EN ISO 12100, and the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 increasingly require an integrated assessment of industrial installations throughout their entire lifecycle. The focus is no longer limited to electrical ignition sources; it also includes mechanical hazards, process influences, software, operating conditions, maintenance, modifications, and the interaction between all safety-related elements.
A high-quality risk assessment therefore goes far beyond simply applying standards. It evaluates how an installation actually performs under real operating conditions and how changes throughout its lifecycle may influence its risk profile. Achieving this requires up-to-date technical expertise, practical experience, and a multidisciplinary approach.
As a result, the focus is shifting from whether a risk assessment exists to whether its quality can be relied upon.
Perhaps this is the most significant development in industrial safety over recent years. The value of a risk assessment is not determined by the size of the report, but by the quality of the technical evaluation on which decisions about safety, reliability, asset availability, and business continuity are based.
A high-quality risk assessment is therefore not an administrative obligation. It is a strategic instrument for professional Asset Management, Asset Integrity, and a safe, reliable, and future-ready industry.
